What is a Sanctuary Candle?

A Sanctuary Candle is a candle found near to the tabernacle in every Catholic Church. Sometimes the candle is in an ornate decorative stand or hanging above the Church Sanctuary. This candle is kept burning throughout day and night to indicate and honor the presence of the Eucharist in the Tabernacle. Faithful know that the Eucharist is present in the tabernacle when they see the candle burning. If the Eucharist is removed from the tabernacle, i.e. Good Friday, the candle is extinguished to indicate that the Eucharist is not present.

Opportunities to donate a sanctuary candle to remember a loved one or particular intention are available throughout the year at the parish office. Candles burn usually for one week’s time and are available for a donation of $25.
